2024 North Country Community Health Heroes Announced

Individuals from Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties to be honored at Community Health Hero Award luncheon



September 25, 2024 –Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization (FDRHPO) and North Country Health Compass Partners are pleased to announce the 2024 Community Health Hero Award recipients.


One Health Hero was chosen in each of Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties who have exhibited a deep sense of dedication, compassion, and selflessness in their efforts to address health-related issues and challenges that affect our local communities. Their contributions have led to positive and lasting impacts on the health of those they serve. 

The 2024 recipients of the Community Health Hero Award are:


·         Jefferson County – Monica Behan Purcell, Founder and CEO, Compassionate Cancer Care Foundation - Monica Behan Purcell is a dedicated leader and advocate in the field of integrative cancer care. As the Executive Director of the Compassionate Care Foundation, she leads a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing essential integrative therapies to cancer patients across Northern New York, improving their quality of life and overall well-being. The foundation offers services such as massage therapy, Reiki, yoga, meditation, acupuncture, nutritional counseling, support groups, and sound therapy, working in tandem with conventional cancer treatments.


·         Lewis County – Krisha Greene, Library Media Specialist, Wellness Team Captain, and Mindfulness Coordinator, Pulaski Central School - Krisha Greene has been working as a school librarian in the North Country for the last 19 years. She is currently in her first year as the Middle/High School Librarian at Pulaski Academy and loves her new position and learning all about the PACS Family. Before her move to Pulaski, Krisha was the PreK-12 Librarian and Tech Integration Coach at Copenhagen Central School. In her role with Copenhagen she was the Wellness Committee Chair, Mentoring Committee Chair, Crisis Committee Chair, Social Committee Chair, Assistant Coach for Girls Varsity Softball and Vice President of the Copenhagen Teachers Association.


·         St. Lawrence County – Martha Pickard Palmer, Dietitian, St. Lawrence Health, and Board Member, GardenShare - Martha works as a Clinical Nutritionist at Potsdam Primary Care part of St. Lawrence Health System. She enjoys getting to know her patients and helping them discover ways to take better care of their health.  She is on the Executive Board and the Education and Outreach Committee for GardenShare.   She started her professional career working with grass-based farmers for the partnership between Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative and the Adirondack North Country Association.  She is very passionate about the connection between healthy farms and healthy people. She lives on her family farm with her husband, two children, pigs, chickens, dogs and too many cats.  


The Community Health Hero Award – given in honor of National Rural Health Day (November 21, 2024) – recognizes North Country residents who have demonstrated outstanding public service and a commitment to improving the health and wellness of their community. Nominations were accepted from community members and recipients were chosen by the North Country Health Compass partners.


This year’s guest speaker will be Kylie Schell, Founder and Executive Director of Encompass Recreation, and recipients will be honored by FDRPHO and North Country Health Compass partners.


An awards luncheon will be held on November 7 at the Hilton Garden Inn Watertown/1000 Islands from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets to attend the luncheon are $15 and registration is required.
